Qatar, also known as the State of Qatar or locally Dawlat Qaá¹­ar, is an Arab emirate in the Middle East occupying the small Qatar Peninsula on the north-easterly coast of the larger Arabian Peninsula. A strait of the Persian Gulf separates Qatar from the relatively-nearby island nation of Bahrain.

Qatar, a former pearl-fishing centre and once one of the poorest Gulf states, is now one of the richest countries in the region, thanks to the exploitation of large oil and gas fields since the 1940s.
